Cáceres,
as told by Leocadia from behind, in a scarf and coat, looking down a cobbled street. Leocadia

Walking tours of the old town, legend walks at dusk and school trips. Two hours, good shoes and not a single date to memorise.

The walks

Three walks, none of them boring

All three on foot and all three from the Plaza Mayor. You don't need to know any history: that's what I'm for.

  1. The old town, stone by stone

From the Arco de la Estrella to the stork on San Mateo, with the feuds between the Golfines and the Ovandos along the way. Spoiler: the storks won.

    When
    Saturdays and Sundays at 11:00
    Age
    All ages
    Difficulty
Easy, with slopes and the odd step
    What to bring
Comfortable shoes, water and a cap if it's sunny
The Torre de Bujaco and the steps of the Arco de la Estrella, on the Plaza Mayor in Cáceres.

    €12 · 2 h

    Under 12s free

  2. Legends by night

The enchanted Moorish girl, the knight who still walks Calle Ancha and what you hear in the cistern when nobody is talking. It's a bit scary; not as scary as climbing the Cuesta de la Compañía.

    When
    Fridays and Saturdays at dusk
    Age
    From 8 years old
    Difficulty
Easy, with little light on some stretches
    What to bring
A jacket, as the stone gets cold at night; I'll bring the lantern
Stone square in the old town of Cáceres at night, lit by street lamps and deserted.

    €14 · 1 h 30 min

    Ages 8 to 12, €7

  3. The old Jewish quarter and San Antonio

Narrow whitewashed streets, the chapel that used to be a synagogue and a slope you climb twice because it's worth it.

    When
    Sundays at 11:00
    Age
    All ages
    Difficulty
    Moderate, with cobbled slopes
    What to bring
Shoes with a good grip; it's tricky with a pushchair
Narrow street of whitewashed houses in Cáceres, empty, with sloping cobbles.

    €10 · 1 h 30 min

    Under 12s free

All of them include public liability and accident insurance. Entry to towers and museums isn't included; it's nearly always free or a couple of euros, and I'll tell you beforehand.

For schools and groups

If there are lots of you, the walk is all yours

From ten people up, you choose the day, the time and how much you want me to go on. I arrange groups by email, with a written quote.

Schools

From Year 4 of primary school to the final year of sixth form.

  • The old town walk, pitched to the year group: the Middle Ages for the little ones, art and the Reconquista for secondary school and sixth form.
  • Monday to Friday mornings, from 1 h 30 min to 2 h.
  • Up to 30 pupils per guide. If there are more of you, I bring a colleague, also licensed.
  • An activity booklet to work on in class before and after.

€4 per pupil. Teachers go free.

How to book

Email me with the year group, the number of pupils and two possible dates. I'll reply within two working days with a fixed quote.

grupos@paseosleocadia.example(example email)

Groups and associations

Associations, senior citizens' trips, big families, companies.

  • Any of the three walks, or a mix, on the day and at the time that suits you.
  • A gentle pace and stops to sit down if needed.
  • Also in Portuguese, since Portugal is just next door.
  • If you want to eat afterwards, I'll tell you where and book you a table.

Fixed price from €110 per group.

How to book

Email me with how many of you there are, which walk you fancy and the day. I'll reply with a quote and we'll arrange it by email.

Who Leocadia is

Born in Cáceres, a historian and a bit of a storyteller

  1. I was born on Calle Pizarro, above my grandmother's grocery shop, and from the window you could see the Torre de Bujaco.
  2. I studied History at the University of Extremadura and I've been showing Cáceres to anyone who'll let me since 2011.
  3. I know the stories of almost every palace and the name of almost none of the storks, though I pretend I do.
  4. If you don't laugh at least once on the walk, the next one is free. I mean it.

I wear my guide badge where you can see it for the whole walk, as the Junta de Extremadura requires.

Meeting point

At the foot of the Arco de la Estrella

(example meeting point)

All the walks start from the same place: the steps of the Arco de la Estrella, on the Plaza Mayor. Get there five minutes early; on the hour we start walking and there's no catching us on the hills.

  • Look for the yellow umbrella, rain or shine. I'm underneath it, with my guide badge round my neck.
  • If you're coming by car, leave it in the Plaza Mayor car park or the one on Paseo de Cánovas: you can't park inside the walls.
  • There are benches and a public toilet on the square itself, in case you need to wait for someone.

Andrés, from Madrid · The old town
