Before you call

Is it urgent?

Before you call, check what's going on. Some things can't wait, and others are cheaper tomorrow.

Water leak

Water coming out of a pipe, through the ceiling or from under a cupboard.

Until I get there

Turn off the main stopcock. It's usually in the kitchen, by the meter or under the sink.
If the water reaches sockets or the fuse box, switch off the main switch.
Put down buckets and towels and move anything that could get wet.
Take a photo and send it to me on WhatsApp. That way I bring the right part.

Blockage

The toilet, shower or sink won't drain or the water level rises.

It dependsUrgent if it's the only toilet in the house or if it's overflowing.

Until I get there

Don't flush again.
Don't pour in caustic soda or hydrochloric acid. They don't work, and then the water burns.
If it's the sink, bail out what water you can with a jug.
If the whole building is blocked, tell the residents' association: it's the soil stack.

No hot water

The water heater or boiler isn't heating, or the water comes out lukewarm.

It dependsUrgent if the water heater is dripping. If not, it can wait until tomorrow.

Until I get there

Check whether the water heater has power and whether a breaker has tripped.
If the water heater is dripping, close the water inlet valve and unplug it.
Note down the make and model on the sticker.

No water in the whole house

No water from any tap.

Can waitIt's hardly ever a job for a plumber.

Until I get there

Ask a neighbour. If they have none either, the water company has cut the supply.
Check that the main stopcock is fully open.
If it's only you and the stopcock is open, call.

If you smell gas, it's not a plumber's job. Open the windows, don't touch any switches or light anything, and call 112.

Coming bank holidays, at the holiday price: Tuesday 8 December (Immaculate Conception); Friday 25 December (Christmas Day); Friday 1 January (New Year's Day).
